Over the last several years on the board, Basnayake has engaged in a wide range of initiatives directed at achieving full voting rights for DC residents, and winning greater autonomy for the District's local government.
Basnayake is of counsel in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP's Washington office where he assists foreign governments and international corporations in legislative and policy matters. He also has strong local connections within the DC community. He chairs his firm's District of Columbia Government Relations Practice. He was previously appointed Commissioner of D.C. Small and Local Business Opportunity under Mayor Fenty and served on Mayor Bower's Transition Team for Economic Development. In addition to his legal work, Basnayake is a Principal and co-founder of Vindara & Co., a major player in nightlife, hospitality, lifestyle marketing and entertainment in the District with projects including Karma by Erwin Gomez, Sheppard with Spike Mendelsohn and Kabin Lounge. He is consistently recognized in the media as one of the most influential Washingtonians under 40.
"As a DC native I'm excited and honored to be assuming this role at a time when there is so much momentum behind our cause" Basnyake said. "We have an ambitious agenda in the coming year and will focus on getting greater nationwide exposure and support for democracy for the citizens of the District of Columbia."
DC Vote is the leading national organization working to secure voting rights, local autonomy and statehood for the District of Columbia. We build support for equality for DC by lobbying Congress and the executive branch, activating support networks around the country, and educating the international community about the lack of democracy in DC. In 2016, DC Vote will step up efforts to build strong supporter networks in key states, and hold members of Congress accountable when they attempt to block local DC laws.
"We look forward to Vinoda's leadership. He is a chair that brings expertise that runs from neighborhoods in DC to capitals around the world. This is particularly important as DC Vote is focusing more attention on building support outside of the District," said DC Vote Executive Director Kimberly Perry. "Vinoda has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to equality for DC, and gives us a strong connection to the young professionals who are moving the District forward."
