President Should Use ‘Taxation Without Representation’ License Plate, Says Petition

The organization DC Vote, which advocates for increased city control over D.C. affairs, hopes to use the power of the people to put pressure on President Obama — to install a new license plate.

Specifically the petition on Whitehouse.gov calls for the presidential limousine to bear a “taxation without representation” license plate, reported Roll Call.

D.C. license plates have had the optional slogan since 2000, in an effort to bring awareness around D.C.’s lack of autonomy and voting representation in Congress. DC Vote itself lobbies not only for increased autonomy but D.C. statehood as well, according to its website.

If the petition garners over 25,000 signatures by Jan. 18, the White House must respond. As of 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 21, it had just over 1,100.

At the end of his term in office, former President Bill Clinton had the license plate installed on the presidential limousine, but former President Bush quickly had it removed, explaining he did not want to make a “political statement,” reported the New York Times in 2001.
